LES SAPINSTHE PINES
Guillaume Apollinairetrans. Stan Solomons

Les sapins en bonnnets pointus
De longues robes revêtues
……Comme des astrologues
Saluent leurs frères abattus
Les bateaux qui sur le Rhin voguent.

Dans les sept arts endoctrinés
Par les vieux sapins leurs ainés
……Qui sont de grands poètes
Ils se savent prédestinés
A briller plus des planètes.

A briller doucement changes
En étoiles et en neiges
……Aux Noëls bienheureuses
Fêtes des sapins en songes
Aux longues branches langoureuses.

Les sapins beaux musiciens
Chantent des noëls anciens
……Au vent des soirs d’automne
Ou bien graves musiciens
Incantent le ciel quand il tonne

Des rangées de blancs chérubins
Remplacent l’hiver les sapins
……Et balancent leurs ailes
L’été ce sont de grands rabbins
Ou bien de vieilles demoiselles.

Sapins médecins divagants
Ils vont offrant leurs bons onguents
……Quand la montagne accouche
De temps en temps sous l’ouragan
Un vieux sapin geint et se couche.

In pointed hats the pines
Decked in long gowns
Like ancient alchemists
Salute the boats upon the Rhine,
Brethren hewn down.

Tutored in seven secret arts
By older trees their kin
But greater poets,
Learning they are pre-destined
To outshine all the planets.

Softly changed into stars
And the dreaming of pines
Snow spangled and fine
As the stars all should be
At joyous Christmas.

They are wondrous musicians,
Chanting  melodies so ancient
Upon the dusk wind of the fall.
Or else fell magicians,
Into the thunder casting spells.

Transmuted the winter pines
Into rows of cherubim
Softly swaying white wings.
In summer tide they seem
Rabbis or old virgins …

Shamans all, the pines
Offering their cure-alls
Mountains in birth pains
And there midst hurricanes
From time to time befalls
An old pine groans and falls.
