APRÈS TROIS ANSTHE SECRET GARDEN
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons

Rien n’a changé.

Pushing aside the flimsy narrow gate
I slipped into the secret of the garden
Lit softly by the early morning sun
Where every dewy blossom pricked with light.

Nothing has changed. I see it once again,
The rattan chairs, the honeysuckles hang,
The silver fountain with its slender song,
And still the ague aspen leaves complain.

In the soft breeze the crimson roses blow,
And lofty lilies arrogantly sway.
Each skylark in its stooping flight I know.

I came across the Druid statuette
At the far end in elegant decay,
Amid the faded scent of mignonette.

ART POÉTIQUETHE ART OF POETRY
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons

Vers d’autres cieux à d’autres amours.

To Charles Morice

Make music above all things.
Favour the verse that trails
Away into the air, pale,
Dissolving to nothing.

Let your words be
Vague and indefinite,
Precious the grey melody
Between infinity and finite

Behind the veil fine eyes
The trembling light of noon,
Or set in soft autumn
Tangled stars in the sky.

We seek only the subtle hint.
No colours, nothing but the stream
Of vague ideas that link
Flute to horn, and dream to dream.

At all costs flee murderous Wit,
Cruel word-play,
Impure laughter only fit
To would-be literati

Take eloquence and kill it dead!
And at the same time,
Tone and tame the rhyme,
Else where may it lead?

The sins of Rhyme! Oh who may tell?
What deaf child and what imbecile
Has forged for us this penny bauble
So meretricious and so hollow?

Music again and ever more
Wingèd thoughts be your poetry!
From out your soul fleeing far
To other loves, to other skies.

Let your verse be a fine adventure
Spread by the fresh morning wind,
With scents of blossoms and with mint.
And all the rest mere literature.

CHANSON D’AUTOMNEAUTUMN SONG
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons
Les sanglots longs
Des violons
De l’automne
Blessent mon coeur
D’une langueur
Monotone.

Tout suffocant
Et blême, quand
Sonne l’heure,
Je me souviens
Des jours anciens
Et je pleure;

Et je m’en vais
Au vent mauvais
Qui m’emporte
Deçà, delà,
Pareil à la
Feuille morte.
The sobbing strings
of violins
of Autumn,
languorous,
monotonous,
pierce my heart.

Fighting to breathe,
paler as each
hour creeps,
I still recall
the days of old,
and weep.

Borne by the whim
of the mischief wind
tossed there and here,
with no relief,
crumpled and sere,
like a dead leaf.

Borne by the mischief

I spin
from here to there
withered and sere
like a dead leaf.

L’HEURE DU BERGERTHE SHEPHERD HOUR
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons
La lune est rouge au brumeux horizon;
Dans un brouillard qui danse la prairie
S’endort fumeuse, et la grenouille crie
Par les joncs verts où circule un frisson;

Les fleurs des eaux referment leurs corolles;
Des peupliers profilent aux lointains,
Droits et serrés, leurs spectres incertains;
Vers les buissons errent les lucioles;

On the horizon moonlight bleeds,
And in the swirling mist that creeps
The frogs cry out amid the reeds
And the lea lies in smoky sleep.

The water lilies fold their blooms;
Stark poplars in a distant line,
Uncertain, silhouette their form,
And in the bushes fireflies gleam.

The owls awake and noiseless row
The dark air with their heavy flight.
The sky is tinged with a faint glow.
Venus emerges. It is night.

CLAIR DE LUNEIN THE MOONLIGHT
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons

Your soul’s a landscape where I witness
Elegant folk swaying and dancing,
Playing upon the lute, and singing,
Bizarre masks half concealing sadness.

Singing there upon a minor key,
A song of love, ruthless and opportune,
Not quite believing they are happy,
Mingling with the wan light of the moon,

In the calm moonlight, in its sad beauty,
Making the birds on branches dream
Making the fountains, tall and slim,
Set among statues, sob in ecstasy.

COLLOQUE SENTIMENTALESENTIMENTAL COLLOQUY
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons

In the age-old park, treading the icy grass
Two lone forms ere a while went past.

Their eyes are dead, their lips are soft and moist,
Almost inaudible their voice.

In the cold lonely park, pacing the grass,
Twin lonely spectres have evoked the past.

“Dost thou recall our ecstasy of old?”
“Why would you think I should recall?”

“And at my name does thy heart pulse and grow?
And in thy dreams seest thou my soul?” “No!”

“Those lovely days of unheard bliss and free …
We fused our lips as one!” “Ah, that might be.”

“How blue the heavens and our hope how high!”
“Hope has fled vanquished to the sombre sky.”

And so they wandered in the unkempt grass,
And night alone heard all the words that passed.

DANS L’INTERMINABLE …THE ACHING PLAIN
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons
Dans l’interminable
Ennui de la plaine
La neige incertaine
Luit comme du sable.

Le ciel est de cuivre
Sans lueur aucune.
On croirait voir vivre
Et mourir la lune.

Comme des nuées
Flottent gris les chênes
Des forêts prochaines
Parmi les buées.

Le ciel est de cuivre
Sans lueur aucune.
On croirait voir vivre
Et mourir la lune.

Corneille poussive
Et vous, les loups maigres,
Par ces bises aigres
Quoi donc vous arrive?

Dans l’interminable
Ennui de la plaine
La neige incertaine
Luit comme du sable.
Interminable and
Far aching plain,
The snow uncertain
Gleams like sand.

The sky of copper hue
Dark and tarnished
Reveals a living moon
Only to vanish.

Oaks float by greyly
Like clouds that pass.
Forests nearby
Framed in the mist

The sky of copper hue
Dark and tarnished
Reveals a living moon
Only to vanish.

Hoarse carrion crow
And wolves that lean
On bitter winds
What is’t with you?

Unending and
Far aching plain
The snow uncertain
Gleams like sand.

LA LUNE BLANCHETHE WHITE MOON
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons
La lune blanche
Luit dans les bois;
De chaque branche
Part une voix
Sous la ramée …

Ô bien aimée.

L’étang reflète,
Profond miroir
La silhouette
Du saule noir
Où le vent pleure …

Rêvons, c’est l’heure.

Un vaste et tendre
Apaisement
Semble descendre
Du firmament
Que l’astre irise ,,,

C’est l’heure exquise.
The white moon gleams
within the woods,
and it would seem
strange voices launch
from every branch.

O my belovèd!

And in the deep below,
where the wind weeps,
the pool reflects
the silhouette
of the black willow.

A time to dream!

A peace descends
from heaven,
tender, immense,
and iridescent,
born of the stars.

Exquisite hour!

NEVERMORENEVERMORE
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons
Souvenir, souvenir, que me veux-tu? L’automne

Memory, what would you have of me? Autumn
Drove the thrush up through the atonic air
And the pale sun pierced in monotone
The chill and windy woods and the leaf flare.

Together but alone we went our ways,
Hair blown awry and monad thoughts unfurled.
Sudden she turned to me her tender gaze:
“What was your finest day?” – a voice of gold,

Dulcet and low, ineffable and fresh.
And I said nothing, offered her a smile,
Seized her pale hand and pressed a kiss.

Ah those first flowers of spring how sweet they were,
And that first whispered “Yes”, how it beguiled,
Won from those lovely lips with gentle murmur.

IL PLEURE DANS MON COEUR …WEEPING
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons
Il pleure dans mon coeur
Comme il pleut sur la ville,
Quelle est cette langueur
Qui pénètre mon coeur?

Ô bruit doux de la pluie
Par terre et sur les toits!
Pour un coeur qui s’ennuie
Ô le chant de la pluie.

Il pleure sans raison
Dans ce coeur que s’écoeure.
Quoi! Nulle trahison?…
Ce deuil est sans raison.

C’est bien la pire peine
De ne savoir pourquoi,
Sans amour et sans haine,
Mon coeur a tant de peine!
My heart sheds tears
Like the rain that falls
A deadly languor
Sears my soul

Soft is the rain
On window pane
For hearts in pain
The song of rain!

Tears without reason
In heart forlorn
There’s surely treason!
No cause to mourn.

Pain ultimate
Knowing not why nor how
Feeling not love nor hate
Nothing but sorrow.

MON RÊVE FAMILIERRECURRENT DREAM
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons

I often dream this penetrating dream:
A stranger, yet she is my lover.
She understands me, and each time
Is not the same, nor quite another.

She understands me and my heart,
Lucid for her alone, ceases to grieve.
For she alone can soothe the hurt
Her tears give to my soul relief.

What colour is her hair? I cannot tell.
Her name? Both resonant and gentle
Like those belovèd exiles in the grave.

Her gaze is like the sculpted stone.
Her voice is distant, calm, and grave,
Like those dear voices that have gone.

I often dream this strange and probing dream
Of one who loves me – love that I return,
And always changing, never quite the same,
And never different – one who loves and yearns

And understands. My lucid heart is won
By her alone, ceases its petty fears
For her alone. She soothes my brow so wan,
Cooling its fever with her tender tears.

I know not even the colour of her hair.
Her name contains soft resonance and fair,
Like those beloved ones who are now banished.

Her gaze is sculptural and statue silent,
And like her voice is calm and grave and distant,
Much like those dear voices that have vanished.

SAGESSEWISDOM
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons

The sky above the eaves
…….Is blue and calm
A tree in spreading leaf
…….Sways its arms.

The church bell in the sky
…….Softly rings
A bird perched in the tree
…….Bitter-sweet sings.

God, true life is there
…….Simple, serene.
The bustle and the stir
…….Is the town scene.

You fool, what have you done,
…….Consumed by tears.
O say, what have you done
…….With your young years?

TRISTESAD MYSTERY
Paul Verlainetrans. Stan Solomons

Je ne me suis pas consolé

Sad the soul, sad the omen
And the sad cause a woman

No consoling, no respite
Although my heart has taken flight

Although my soul, although my heart
From this my love had fled afar

No consoling, no respite
Although my heart has taken flight.

My heart, this tender heart of mine
Said to my soul:”This pain

This arrogance can it be real,
This proud exile, this sad exile?”

My soul said to my heart “Here
Is a mystery, a snare,

That we are here though we are far,
Though we have fled away from her”.
